一、西湖的传说
相传远古时候，天河东边石窑里住着一条玉龙，天河西边树林中住着一只金凤，它们有一次在银河的仙岛上找到了一块璞玉，于是一起把璞玉琢磨了许多年，终于使璞玉成了一颗璀璨的明珠。这颗明珠光照到哪里，哪里的树木就常青，百花就盛开。
这个消息后来传到了天宫，贪心的王母娘娘为了得到这颗宝珠，就派了天兵把明珠偷走。玉龙和金凤发觉明珠不见了，到处寻找。后来得知在王母娘娘手中，于是就赶去天宫向王母索取，王母不肯，死护住明珠不放，玉龙和金凤则上前去抢，于是你争我夺，你拉我扯，明珠由天宫阶沿滚落到人间。为不让明珠跌碎，玉龙和金凤也紧随着明珠往下飞。这颗明珠一落地，立刻变成晶莹碧绿的西湖。玉龙和金凤舍不得离开自己辛勤琢磨成的明珠，就变成两座山来守护它。这两座山，一座是雄伟的玉龙山（今名玉皇山），一座是青翠的金凤山（今名凤凰山）。
从此，它们永远守护在西湖之滨。杭州人民至今还在传诵着“西湖明珠从天降，龙飞凤舞到钱塘”的歌谣。
